The Ricky Gervais Show host shared with his 15.1 million Twitter followers that he recently ‘lived through the worst eight hours of illness’ in his life.

He explained to fans: “I’m not well today. In fact, I’d say I just lived through the worst 8 hours of illness of my life.

“Severe abdominal pains, vomiting every time I moved, (but only tiny bits of bile), hot sweats and chills, oh, and I really want to know who planted the 12 gravy bombs up my a***.”

Fans have taken to the comments to wish him well.

One person says: “Oh dear, that’s terrible! Sounds like food poisoning Ricky. Drink plenty of water and stay in bed. Probably from the travelling or something. Take care.”

“Sending you well wishes for a speedy recovery, Ricky,” comments someone else.

Another fan adds: “Ricky! Get better soon! Sending positive vibes for a speedy recovery!”

Someone else jokes that Gervais’ detailed post it is the ‘perfect sick note’.

They write: “And just like that Ricky Gervais provides the template for the perfect sick note! Just copy and paste that description, and voilà – you’ve got yourself a guaranteed day off.

“Even your boss will be too terrified to question it.”

Responding to comments that wished him well, Gervais says he believes he caught norovirus.

Someone writes: “Sounds like it is norovirus that is going around. My friend and my daughter and son-in-law have had it. It is awful. Hope you get better soon.”

This prompted the Night at the Museum actor to respond: “Yeah that’s what I thought.”

“If it’s norovirus it’s bad while it lasts but it doesn’t last long,” assures another person.

Norovirus – also known as the ‘winter vomiting bug’ – is a stomach bug that causes vomiting and diarrhoea, as per the NHS.

Luckily, it only tends to last for only a couple of days.
