The Duchess of York has shared a health update.

Sarah Ferguson, 63, is the ex-wife of Prince Andrew, 63, and the pair share two children: Princess Beatrice, 35, and Princess Eugenie, 33.

The Duchess – who also goes by the name Fergie – has taken to her podcast Tea Talks and revealed she’s been experiencing discomfort following a life-saving operation.

Ferguson has opened up in her podcast about the ‘really difficult’ experience.

Ferguson says she is now having two or three lymphatic drainage massages per week after being diagnosed with breast cancer and undergoing a single mastectomy. She’s described it as a ‘real luxury treatment’.

She explained to her co-host, Sarah Jane Thompson, that she sought the treatment as she wanted to avoid lymphedema.

Lymphedema is swelling due to a build-up of lymph fluid in the body. Typically, it happens in the arms or legs, however, it can occur in other parts of the body too.

“Secondary lymphoedema often affects people with cancers that involve the lymph system or who’ve had treatment to the lymph nodes, such as breast cancer,” the NHS website says.

In the podcast, Ferguson explained: “Lymphedema is a side effect of breast cancer operations and it can be really difficult.”

Singing the treatment’s praises, she added: “Lymphedema is a specialised art, [my masseuse] is so kind, and she has to be kind to someone who’s been through so many cuts. Lymph drainage is so light.”

Ferguson went on to urge her podcast listeners to seek treatment if they’ve been through cancer.

“I hope anyone who has been through a mastectomy, make sure you get some really good lymph drainage specialist to get you straight away, moving the lymph around,” the Duchess said.

Revealing she has several treatments per week, she added: “I have upped it because I didn’t want chronic lymphedema which is a side effect of breast cancer operations and it can be really difficult.”

Elsewhere on the Tea Talks podcast, Ferguson revealed that she had given her reconstructed breast a name.

She said: “On my left, he’s called Derek. He’s very important because he saved my life.”

When asked why she had called him ‘Derek’, Ferguson commented: “I don’t know, it just made me laugh that I have now a friend who’s with me all the time who’s protecting with his shield of armour.”

She went on to say that her other breast – which is called ‘Eric’ – is ‘feeling rather sad’.

“He’s not as perky as Derek on the left, but I’ll get Eric balanced, don’t worry,” the Duchess said.
