Velma has been confirmed as a lesbian in the latest Scooby-Doo movie – and she’s even got a new love interest.

In the Halloween special, called Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo, a number of clips have begun to surface online.

One of the scenes shows Velma looking all flustered as her cheeks go red and her glasses steam up when she meets fashion designer Coco Diablo.

In a separate clip, she is left googly-eyed when the costume maker puts her hands on the Mystery Incorporated member.

Then in another scene, she admits to Daphne that she is ‘crushing big time’ over Diablo.

Velma’s sexuality has always been ambiguous or hinted at, and now fans are extremely happy that it has officially been confirmed.

In a tweet that has over 200,000 likes, one viewer posted “OMG LESBIAN VELMA FINALLY.”

A second fan posted: “I am so f***ing down for lesbian Velma, I’ve wanted this all my life.”

“It just hit me that VELMA IS A LESBIAN! A character from my childhood is canonically a lesbian, a kid’s cartoon character is a lesbian!! I’m so happy,” expressed someone else.

Another viewer posted: “Velma is confirmed finally as lesbian and I’m living for y’all crying about that.”

The idea of Velma being a lesbian has been around for a long time, with Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn revealing he wrote it in his script for the live-action Scooby-Doo movies.

In a Twitter Q&A in 2020, he was asked: “Please make our live-action lesbian Velma dreams come true.”

Gunn responded: “I tried! In 2001 Velma was explicitly gay in my initial script. But the studio just kept watering it down and watering it down, becoming ambiguous (the version shot), then nothing (the released version) and finally having a boyfriend (the sequel).”

Tony Cervone, who is a veteran animator known for his work with Looney Tunes and Scooby-Doo, also acknowledged Velma’s sexuality.

In an Instagram post during Pride Month in 2020, he wrote: “I’ve said this before, but Velma in ‘Mystery Incorporated’ is not bi. She’s gay.

“We always planned on Velma acting a little off and out of character when she was dating Shaggy because that relationship was wrong for her and she had unspoken difficulty with the why.

“There are hints about the why in that episode with the mermaid, and if you follow the entire Marcie arc it seems as clear as we could make it 10 years ago. I don’t think Marcie and Velma had time to act on their feelings during the main timeline, but post-reset, they are a couple.

“You can not like it, but this was our intention.”

Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo is available to rent or purchase from Amazon Prime or stream on HBO Max.
