DoorDash Driver Immediately Regrets Leaving ‘Nasty’ Note For Customer Who Didn’t Tip
A DoorDash driver left a rude surprise inside a customer’s order before realizing she had made a mistake.
Ordering food from a delivery service is a quick and easy way to get your favorite foods sent straight to your door.
But what you might not expect when getting a takeout, though, is an unsolicited side of attitude…
A viral TikTok video, posted by user @tameraaw, has divided the internet.
“Wait that’s crazy that she put something in your bag though ’cause they’re not supposed to mess with the bags,” one viewer writes.
Another adds: “The guilt! She knows she messed up.”
“She didn’t have to accept the order. It shows you before you accept if there’s a tip or not,” a third replies.
But not everyone is totally against the driver.
“To be fair to the lady she’s probably had some horrible experiences with horrible customers to make her do a thing like this,” one person writes.
“You should always leave a note saying you’ll tip cash for this exact reason,” advises another.
As of June 2024, there are 7 million active DoorDash couriers in the United States as per Backlinko.
According to Indeed, the average DoorDash driver’s hourly pay is approximately $16.51, which is 6% below the national average.
Drivers, for the most part, rely on tips.
But whether customers should always tip their delivery drivers, and how much they should tip if they do, has been at the center of a fierce debate for years.
In a Reddit thread discussing tipping culture in US, one user writes: “Tipping culture in the United States sucks, but I’m not going to punish the employee for it.
“Unfortunately they make their money off tips and I can stick it to the CEO by not tipping but that only hurts the employee who depends on those tips. I tip at least 20% every time.”
In agreement, another writes: “What’s f***ed up is that people know how it works yet use the service anyway and, when they do, are actually ok with and feel entitled to someone else’s time and gas for free.”
On the other hand, some argue that it isn’t the customer’s responsibility to ensure the delivery driver is paid appropriately.
“[Tipping is] a f***ing scam, the employee’s appreciation for doing their job is… THEIR PAY… it’s not the customers job to make sure the employee gets a liveable amount of money,” one user writes.
“Dashers don’t have to accept the order. Don’t like the tip? Don’t take it,” another adds.
Speaking to Vice about the ongoing tipping debate, a DoorDash spokesperson said: “While nothing in our guidelines explicitly prohibits Dashers from asking a customer for a tip, we have a zero-tolerance policy for harassment by any member of our community on the DoorDash platform. This includes instances where Dashers harass customers for a tip.”
Now a video, which has been viewed over 350,000 times, has reignited the debate.
@tameraaw from Maryland posted ring camera footage of her answering the door to her food delivery driver, with the caption: “POV: Your Door Dasher leaves a nasty note in your food thinking you wouldn’t tip.”
As Tamera is handed the bag of food by the DoorDash driver, she tries to hand the worker some cash.
The driver looks embarrassed, refuses the accept the tip and apologizes: “You keep that, I didn’t see a tip on the app, and I put a little card in there… I’m sorry.”
Viewers had a lot to say, and, replying to a couple of the comments left on the video, Tamera shared that she usually preferred to leave a cash tip rather than a tip on the app for a couple of reasons.
The first, she said, was because she thought drivers preferred to receive their tips in cash as it ensures that the tip will go to them and not to the delivery company.
The second is because, in the past, she’s had delivery drivers steal her food and take the tip without delivering her order.
After being asked by viewers to post the letter, Tamera shared a second video, revealing the note inside her order which read: “Lucky for you I didn’t bother the food. But next time consider tipping your driver.”
