A medical expert who goes by the username @lifeofadoctor on TikTok has reassured us that the experience is far more common than people think.
The emergency physician responded to a TikToker who said they’d grown concerned about their ‘random’ chest pains ‘every six months’.
Sound familiar? Well, the answer should come as a relief to many.
In a video, he explains: “If you’ve ever had random chest pain, listen closely. Not all chest pain comes from the heart.
“In fact, one of the most common causes of chest pain is something known as pre-cordial catch syndrome.
“This is usually described as sudden onset sharp chest pain that’s located in this area. Now, this pain lasts for a few seconds to two minutes and it’s worse with deep breathing.
“And this is believed to be due to a pinched nerve that runs across a chest wall and is not life-threatening.”
The clip boasts a whopping 17.4 million views and has more than 13,000 comments.
One person says in the comments: “I’ve had this since I was a kid, makes me happy to know it’s not that deep.”
Another writes: “I would get this quite often as a child, my mother said it was gas and would pound on my back…”

“I’ve had this throughout childhood and had it checked a few years ago as I was concerned. I fixed my posture and haven’t had it since,” adds a third.
Somebody else says: “I always knew it wasn’t life-threatening but each time it happens I’m always like, ‘Well this is it’.”
“The amount of time I thought I was getting a heart attack and thinking I am way too young to go out this way lmao,” comments another.
While a sixth says: “I thought I was dying for YEARS.”

Of course, if your chest pains don’t go away, you should seek urgent medical attention.
Chest pain can cause several different sensations, depending on what’s triggering the symptom.
Fortunately, the cause of the problem is often unrelated to the heart – though there’s no easy way to tell without seeing a doctor.
