X Factor star Mitchell Callaway has been charged with the murder of a nine-month-old girl.

Callaway, 37, gained recognition as a participant in Season 3 of X Factor Australia in 2011.

He competed in the Over 25s category and was mentored by Natalie Bassingthwaighte, but was ultimately eliminated in Week 6.

Now, he finds himself at the centre of a horrifying murder investigation.

According to reports, Callaway has been charged with the murder of a nine-month-old baby girl following a five-year police investigation.

After his arrest, Callaway was led from a residence in Bowraville, New South Wales, and later charged at Macksville Police Station.

The incident occurred on July 23, 2018, when emergency services responded to a report of an unresponsive baby girl at a home in Binnaway.

Despite medical efforts at Coonabarabran Hospital, the child passed away shortly after.

The case has been under investigation by detectives from Orana Mid-Western Police District as part of Strike Force King.

It’s believed that new information led to the execution of a search warrant in Binnaway on May 31.

Based on further inquiries, Callaway was arrested and charged with murder on June 8.

He appeared in Macksville Local Court on Thursday and was denied bail.

He is scheduled to appear before Coffs Harbour Local Court on June 13.

In an interview with the Daily Mail, the mother of the nine-month-old baby expressed her profound grief.

She shared a heartbreaking tribute to her late daughter, five years on from the tragic incident.

The mother described the recent development in her daughter’s case as the ‘best news ever’ after enduring years of pain, suffering, and grief.

While acknowledging that there is still a long road ahead as the legal process unfolds, she expressed gratitude for witnessing the beginning of justice.

In a poignant statement, the mother expressed how her daughter has been the driving force behind her resilience, will to live, and ability to persevere so far.

She conveyed her unending love for her little girl, acknowledging the void left by her absence and how this development, while unable to bring her back, brings a sense of peace and the justice she deserves.

With heartfelt words, the mother concluded her tribute by emphasising her everlasting love for her precious daughter, forever cherishing her memory and wishing she could be present in their lives.

She signed the statement off by saying: “Mummy loves you.”

Callaway’s audition for the X Factor featured a performance of Keith Urban’s song ‘Tonight I Wanna Cry’.

He finished in seventh place after losing the sing-off to Johnny Ruffo.
