Costume Designer Behind Sam Smith’s Brits Outfit Explains What It Represents
The costume designer behind Sam Smith’s Brits outfit has explained what it represents.
The ‘Stay With Me’ singer, 30, is one of the UK’s biggest pop stars and has even won an Oscar for their James Bond track ‘Writing’s On The Wall’.
Although their recent track with Kim Petras, ‘Unholy’, is dominating the charts, they’ve been facing a ton of backlash.
Many people are taking to Twitter and saying that Smith’s Grammys performance was ‘satanic’.
They also performed their song at the Brits over the weekend, however, everyone was distracted by Smith’s dramatic entrance on the red carpet.

The ‘Money On My Mind’ artist showed up to the iconic music awards in a custom-made black, balloon-like latex suit which featured puffed up legs and shoulders.
Unsurprisingly, it’s going viral on social media and has even caught the attention of Piers Morgan, who says Smith wore it as they’re ‘thirsty for attention’.
As the unique red carpet look has amassed such attention, the designer has spoken out and defended the design.

The outfit was designed by London-based fashion label Harri, which was founded by London College of Fashion MA Fashion graduate Harikrishnan Keezhathil Surendran Pillai.
In an interview with Women’s Wear Daily, Pillai explains that the design is all about ‘celebrating’ Smith’s ‘natural form’.
“Sam was having a lot of hate comments recently after ‘Unholy’ about their body image. This is my take on celebrating their natural form and the beauty of being one’s self,” the designer comments.
“I wanted to create an image which people have never seen Sam in.”
Pillai also discussed the look on Good Morning Britain, where he revealed that it took him four days to make the suit.
He added that no talcum powder was needed to get the ‘Money On My Mind’ singer into the design.
Many people have taken to social media to defend Smith’s bold red carpet look.
One fan writes: “I may not always like the outfits Sam Smith chooses, but I love their confidence while wearing them.”
