People have been left outraged after Evan Peters won a Golden Globe for his role as Jeffrey Dahmer.

The American Horror Story star, 35, played the notorious serial killer in Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, which is the fourth biggest show in Netflix’s history.

The drama series – created by AHS creator Ryan Murphy –  follows the murderer, who was nicknamed the Milwaukee Monster, and his actions between 1978 and 1991.

Peters received a ton of critical praise for his performance, with some going as far as calling him ‘one of the most talented actors of our generation’.

However, not everyone believes it was appropriate for him to have won the Best Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Television Film award for his role.

At the 2023 Golden Globes – held in Beverly Hills on January 10, 2023 – Peters beat the likes of Andrew Garfield, Colin Firth, Sebastian Stan, and Taron Egerton, to bag himself the Best Actor award at the prestigious ceremony.

In his acceptance speech, the X-Men: Apocalypse star said: “Thank you to the HFPA, thank you to Netflix and Mr Ryan Murphy for letting me be a part of your brilliant vision again… and the entire post-production team for showing me how they work their brilliant magic.

“I want to thank this incredible cast and crew and directors.

“It was a colossal team effort. Everyone gave it their all and I would not be up here without them. I want to thank my family, friends, and loved ones who carried me to the finish line.

“And last but most importantly I want to thank everyone who watched the show it was a difficult one to make, a difficult one to watch but I sincerely hope some good came out of it.”

After watching the ceremony, many people took to social media and expressed their disappointment at Peters winning the role, as well as the fact he did not acknowledge any of the victims’ families during his speech.

One person tweeted: “I’m kinda grossed out he won for that controversial a** show and the least he could have done was acknowledge the victims and their families for exploiting them for Dahmer.

“Nasty work.”

“Imagine you lost a family member due to Jeffery Dahmer and find out somebody got AWARDED for dramatising his crimes,” a second added.

A third commented: “Evan Peters winning an award for playing Jeffrey Dahmer and not even taking a second to acknowledge the victims and their families rubs me the wrong way.”

While another user said: “This feels… just wrong. I don’t know man. Honouring the role of Dahmer feels weird.

“He needed to say something about the victims but he didn’t.”

Someone else added: “Wonder how the victim’s families are feeling about this right now…

“The show should’ve never been made and this just makes it worse shame on Evan [Peters] and Ryan [Murphy].”

However, not everyone felt this way and defended Peters by saying the award was for him and not the character.

One user expressed: “The award wasn’t for the character. The award is for whoever did the best job at ACTING. Why are so many of y’all acting like Evan Peters IS Jeffrey Dahmer?

“Can y’all not understand the difference between acting vs. the show production vs. the real-life person? They aren’t the same thing!”

Another added: “So cringe how you can not dissociate the real Jeffrey Dahmer and Evan Peters who is just the actor who played him. I’m ashamed for you.”

“The award is for ACTING. Have y’all forgotten what acting is? Evan Peters isn’t Jeffrey Dahmer,” said a third.

Although Monster was a hugely successful show, it did receive a wave of backlash from the families affected by Dahmer’s murders, with some saying it ‘retraumatised’ them.

However, Murphy has confirmed that the series has been renewed for two more seasons and it will explore other notorious serial killers.
