Jim Carrey was once told he had just ‘10 minutes to live’.

The Hollywood star, 60, is best known for starring in hit films such as Dumb & Dumber, The Mask, Ace Ventura and Liar Liar.

The actor is extremely open with fans on social media and enjoys sharing his thoughts and opinions.

Carrey has now opened up about what happened when he ‘truly believed’ he was about to die.

The actor was talking to Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show when the terrifying ordeal came up.

While discussing his new memoir, Carrey explains why his panic-stricken face is on the book’s cover.

He says: “The cover is actually my face after being told I have 10 minutes to live.”

The actor explains that he was in Hawaii with his daughter when he got a phone call from his assistant telling him that a missile was heading his way.

Everyone in the area was sent an emergency text that read: “Emergency alert: BALLISTIC MISSILE THREAT INBOUND TO HAWAII.

“SEEK IMMEDIATE SHELTER. THIS IS NOT A DRILL.”

Carrey says that he initially tried to flee, before realising that he did not have time to escape.

“It was completely real to us,” he says.

“And I went – you know – my brain started winding and I tried to get off the island.

“I couldn’t get off the island. And then, the question was posed, should we all try to get together?

“I said, ‘I don’t want to die in my car’.

“And we had to say goodbye. And I sat on Lanai [an island in Hawaii] and looked out at the ocean.

“And at that point, I started going, ‘OK, what can I do with this last moment of time?’.

“I just decided to go through a list of gratitudes and honest to God I just could not stop thinking of wonderful things that have happened to me and blessings I’ve had.”

“It was lovely. And I got to a point of grace at about two minutes to spare I found out it wasn’t actually happening.

“All I was planning to do was close my eyes and be thankful because it’s been a good ride.”

Fallon asked the actor how he reacted when he realised that it had been sent by mistake.

“I got p***** off and heads rolled,” Carrey replied.

The alert was sent in January 2018 and told residents of the island to take cover from an incoming missile.

Authorities later said that there had been a miscommunication during an exercise at the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency.

An employee was reportedly sacked in the aftermath of the incident.

Thankfully, the terrifying scenario resulted in nothing more than a pretty rubbish memory for a very relieved comedic actor.
