Chernobyl radiation has reportedly ‘exceeded control levels’ after multiple areas have been seized by Russia.

Ukraine’s parliament has announced on Twitter that recent data shows ‘the control levels of gamma radiation dose rate’ has ‘exceeded’ its usual amount.

The full statement reads: “Data from the automated radiation monitoring system of the exclusion zone, which is available online, indicate that the control levels of gamma radiation dose rate (red dots) have been exceeded at a significant number of observation points.”

The State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine has added that it’s ‘impossible’ to determine what has triggered the change.

A representative reportedly stated: “It is currently impossible to establish the reasons for the change in the radiation background in the exclusion zone because of the occupation and military fight in this territory.”

Although some experts are convinced the issue may be down to a reactor breach, others have speculated that the rise in radiation is due to the fact the soil may have been disturbed.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has commented on the situation, revealing that although there’s a ‘grave concern’ for the site, there has been no destruction reported so far.

IAEA’s Director-General, Rafael Mariano Grossi, is believed to have said: “It is of vital importance that the safe and secure operations of the nuclear facilities in [the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone] should not be affected or disrupted in any way.”

According to reports, the Chernobyl plant currently has shelter over it, which was constructed to prevent the release of further radioactive matter. In 2016, it was apparently updated to ‘withstand a tornado’.
