Angelyn and Richard Burk, from Seattle, US, are living on a cruise ship as they’ve concluded it’s much more affordable than paying a mortgage.
The couple made this drastic decision in March 2021, as they also wanted to find a cheap and affordable form of travel.
In an interview with 7News, Angelyn says: “Our original plan was to stay in different countries for a month at a time and eventually retire to cruise ships as we got older.”
She says the pair ‘love to travel’ and so moving onto a cruise ship ‘made financial sense’.
Angelyn, who is a former accountant, sat down and worked out the numbers with her husband.

They realised that could afford to live on a cruise ship for $43.74 (£35.44) a day.
Angelyn discovered that if they used their loyalty memberships and took advantage of sales, they’d be able to retire at that very moment.
She continues: “We have been frugal all our lives to save and invest in order to achieve our goal.
“We are not into materialistic things but experiences.”
The couple jumped on the ship with only one suitcase each and do not plan on returning to their nine-to-five lives.
Elsewhere in her chat with 7News, Angelyn says they have no plans to live on land in the future.
Since embarking on this journey, they have been on various cruise ships around the world, including a 51-day trip from Seattle to Sydney.
While Italy, Canada, Iceland, and the Bahamas have been some of their favourites, the Burks say the best country they’ve visited is Singapore.

They loved it so much that they have actually gone back to the Asian country multiple times.
“I believe this is achievable for the everyday cruiser, but it does take effort,” Angelyn adds.
“It is leisurely travel without the complications of booking hotels, restaurants and transportation while staying within our budget.”
The couple believes that there are no negatives to living at sea, but Angelyn warns anyone who wants to make a living on the sea that they should try long-term cruises before making it permanent.
