‘You’re Beautiful’ has undoubtedly been one of the most played and adored love songs of the past 15 or so years, but now the meaning of the lyrics has been revealed and they’re pretty ‘creepy’.

James Blunt’s track, which dropped in 2005, propelled him into the limelight and established him as one of the UK’s most brilliant and emotionally expressive songwriters of the era.

The song is typically heard in romantic settings, such as weddings, proposals, or candlelit dinners.

But despite the amorous sentiment of Blunt’s enduring track, the inspiration behind it could be described as somewhat eerie or unsettling.

During a recent guest appearance on The John Bishop Show on Saturday, Blunt disclosed the origin story behind the cherished ballad.

Surprisingly, it’s not as hopelessly romantic as one might imagine…

Accompanied on the show by guest comedian Katherine Ryan, the singer-songwriter openly shared the inspiration behind his composition of ‘You’re Beautiful’ in response to John Bishop’s question.

The ‘Goodbye My Lover’ singer explained: “It’s about me stalking somebody else’s girlfriend on the underground while I’m high.”

Blunt then followed up by jokingly saying: “But people play it at their weddings, which is nice.”

As the Twitter reactions have streamed in, a number of viewers at home have been undeniably taken aback by the song’s true meaning.

One individual tweeted: “You’re Beautiful’ – it really is about a high stalker,” along with a mind-blown emoji.

Another person remarked: “Always thought it was creepy.”

“I don’t think people pay attention to the lyrics. This one was very clear and open,” somebody else wrote.

‘You’re Beautiful’ topped the charts and went to No.1 in various countries, including the UK, Canada, Belgium, Norway, the Netherlands, and Italy.

During an appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show years ago, Blunt subtly hinted at the song’s inspiration, mentioning that it was about his ex-girlfriend.

Reflecting on the experience, he said: “It’s kind of miserable. It was about seeing my ex-girlfriend on the Underground in London with her new man, who I didn’t know existed.”
