A man refused to give up his seat on a plane so that another passenger could sit next to his wife on her birthday.
There’s a multitude of reasons why someone might want to swap seats onboard an aircraft.
Perhaps they’re trying to avoid someone with a flagrant disregard for wearing deodorant… we’ve all been there.
Or maybe they’re a nervous flyer who would rather sit towards the back of the plane to increase their chances of survival in case of a crash.
However, when one man who wanted to sit next to his wife asked the passenger next to her if they could swap – things got pretty awkward.

Jay Kloss and his wife, Zoe, were travelling with Virgin Australia for her birthday.
Unfortunately, the couples’ tickets were not together.
Zoe had a window seat while Jay was in an aisle seat.
The Melbourne couple explained the situation in a TikTok which has now been viewed more than 340,000 times.

Jay says that when he initially asked the stranger if he could swap seats, he was ignored at first.
He says he said: “‘Hey, would you mind moving so I could sit with my missus? It’s her birthday’.”
He continues: “And he just looks at me, he doesn’t respond.”
“I was like, ‘Is it possible if you switch to here?’.
“He was like, ‘No, I won’t, but I’ll sit here [Zoe’s window seat]’.”
Jay says the man would have been getting the same seat, just on the other side of the plane.
But the stranger reaffirmed that he would only move if he could sit in Zoe’s window seat.
When Zoe asked why he was refusing to comply with what might be considered a fairly unproblematic request, the stranger said ‘No problem, but not moving’.
Jay finished the video by asking: “Can somebody explain to me, what the hell is going on here?
“It’s the same seat, just on a different side of the aisle.”
While many agreed that the man could have just been nice and moved, others were not quite as convinced.
One person wrote: “The dude didn’t have to give up his seat, even if it was the nice thing to do.
“Just gotta deal with people answering Y or N. Can’t expect it to be Y.”

Another added: “Why didn’t you book seats next to each other? Seems like it’s a you problem not a his problem.”
A third commented: “I’m so glad that guy didn’t move for you.”
Jay was backed by quite a few people in the comments, though.
“Life is too short to be unhelpful,” one wrote.
In the TikTok, Jay did say a passenger in the window seat next to him offered to swap with Zoe in the end – so they did eventually end up sitting next to each other.
