Mark Labbett’s nickname in the popular game show, The Chase, has been ‘solved’ by fans.

People are taking to social media and discussing how Labbett is referred to as ‘The Beast,’ and asking why.

Theorising, one tweeted: “You think ‘The Beast’ is called that because he is almost 7ft tall and a big chap. But ‘La Bête’ means ‘The Beast’ in French.”

Although this hasn’t officially been confirmed, it would make for a clever play on words regarding his surname.

Reacting to comment, one replied: I have watched almost every episode of The Chase since it started airing in 2009 and I am only TODAY learning that Mark Labbett is called ‘The Beast’ cos ‘la bête’ is french for ‘The Beast,’ not just because he is a portly gentleman.”

Another added: “Realising that Mark Labbett from The Chase is called ‘The Beast’ because ‘La Bête’.”

A third commented: This genuinely thrills me.”

Labbett is not the only quizzer to have his nickname influenced by his last name.

Paul Sinha, who joined the show in 2011, was given the title ‘The Sinnerman’.

While Chaser Shaun Wallace has had to defend his own nickname on the show, ‘The Dark Destroyer’.

When London lawyer Paula Rhone-Adrien appeared on the Lorraine show, she said she refused to let her kids watch the ITV programme, as she thought the name was offensive.

At the time, she remarked: “We have a fantastic game show. A quiz show which is on but the only person who is black is named ‘The Dark Destroyer’.

“Now I do not let my children watch the first 10 minutes of this amazing quiz show because I do not want my kids to hear this amazing mastermind champion described purely down to the colour of his skin.”

In response, Wallace took to Twitter and penned: “I am proud to be dark in skin who destroys his opponents intellectually.”
