Sinéad O’Connor was well known for her shaved head but not many fans know the heartbreaking reasons behind it.
O’Connor – who went by the name Shuhada’ Sadaqat after converting to Islam in 2018 – was best known for the song ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’.
Heartbreakingly, it was confirmed that the Irish musician died aged 56 months after the tragic death of her 17-year-old son.
O’Connor was well-known for having a shaved head and although some people may presume it was a fashion choice, it had significant reasoning behind it.

The legendary singer revealed in an interview with TV psychologist Dr Phil – which took place in 2017 – that she shaved her hair off following her mother’s cruel comments.
O’Connor recalled: “My sister had the most glorious red hair, the type you’d be jealous of. But my mother took it into her head that my sister’s hair was ugly, and horrible and disgusting.
“And she started, when I had long hair, she would introduce us as her pretty daughter and her ugly daughter. And that’s why I cut my hair off. I didn’t want to be pretty.”
The ‘This is The Day’ singer said that felt it was ‘dangerous to be pretty’ as it had resulted in her ‘getting r***d and m****ted everywhere’ that she went.
“That was a huge part of it,” she continued. “I didn’t want to be r***d or m****ted, I did not want to dress like a girl, I did not want to be pretty. Other girls beat you up if you were pretty too.”
But it wasn’t just O’Connor’s mother’s comments that resulted in her shaving her head.
Before the release of her first album, ‘The Lion and the Cobra’, she was asked whether she could grow her hair ‘long’ and ‘wear short skirts’.
She explained: “They wanted to sell me on my s**uality,” but she didn’t want to be sold on that.

O’Connor declared: “If I was going to be successful, I wanted it to be because I was a good musician.”
The late singer’s shaved head would go on to become a symbol of defiance against the s**ualisation of women within the industry.
