An Uber Eats driver broke down in tears after being tipped just $1.19 for an hour-long delivery.

Uber Eats has approximately 900,000 restaurant partners and in 2021, the company reportedly generated $8.3 billion in revenue.

According to reports, Uber Eats drivers in the US typically earn around $10 to $15 per hour after accounting for vehicle expenses and other costs.

This means that drivers heavily rely on tips to top up their income.

But one man was left devastated after being left a pretty measly tip for a lot of work.

Smithson Michael has gone viral on TikTok after explaining the struggles of working for food delivery companies in the US.

The delivery driver, who refers to himself as @deliveryguy100 on the social media platform, explains in the clip: “I wish people knew what it was like to deliver for Uber Eats, Postmates, DoorDash, all these companies.

“I just spent an hour driving around for a $1.19 tip. I mean would it hurt y’all to tip us, throw us five dollars?

“I got a $1.19 tip and $2 from the app. What’s that? That’s not even enough to cover gas.

“How am I supposed to live like that?

“Homeless? I’m there. This and I’m sitting here and it’s gone, four months behind. There’s no way I could pay for that.”

He adds: “Everything fell apart on me and I haven’t been able to sustain myself, provide for myself and these are essential services.

“I just wish people knew what it was like. I wish they understood what it was like to drive for these services.”

Since the clip was first shared, it’s amassed over 1.5 million views and thousands have argued how it’s not right when people don’t tip.

One viewer comments: “I always tip and if I can’t, I don’t order.”

Another adds: “I feel embarrassed if you don’t tip at least $5.”

“TIP TIP TIP! At least 20 per cent! Thank you for providing food for so many!” writes a third person.

Somebody else says: “I tip at minimum $10. If I’m not going to leave my house, it has to be worth someone else’s trip. I’m sorry.”

However, some people say the ‘outrageous’ costs of ordering food made it difficult to tip as much as they’d like to.

“I get it, I’m so sorry love,” a follower sympathises. “It’s the system though. It’s not the customer’s fault.”

A second says: “If the prices weren’t so outrageous, I would tip.”

While a third viewer comments: “Maybe hold the companies accountable.”
