A dog trainer has revealed the five breeds of dog he’d never personally own – plus, all the pertinent reasons why.

While having a dog can bring the utmost joy, it’s also worth remembering that it’s a huge responsibility.

Walking, feeding, and training them is no mean feat, and should not be undertaken lightly.

Amongst the thousands of different breeds out there, there are some which are particularly difficult on owners.

Sydney-based dog trainer Elijah Boateng took to TikTok to share the five breeds he would never recommend owning. Check them out here:

5. Husky

“The husky,” he begins.

“This is quite a stubborn dog, I don’t love the temperaments on them, they feel to me like they still need to be in the wild rather than in people’s homes.”

He continues to News.com.au: “I wouldn’t have one of those dogs unless my life depended on it.

“I don’t love their personalities, I train a lot of them. They make a lot of my clients’ lives very difficult … They’re not the hardest dogs in the sense that they have the biggest energy levels, but they’re the most dominant.

“As soon as they thought they can’t get away and run off, they just started howling and screaming like they were going to die and it’s literally never happened with any dog.”

4. Maremma sheepdog

Another breed on Boateng’s no-list is the Maremma sheepdog.

He calls them ‘serious dogs that are not fun to train’.

3. Pug

Pugs are also not a beloved breed of Boateng’s.

“I don’t want a dog that I have to get a surgery for so I can keep them living. I want a dog that can survive on their own,” he says.

“I just don’t love pugs. How they are, how they breathe, it just seems a little bit funny to me.”

2. Cavoodle

A controversial addition to his list is the cavoodle.

“They’re manageable, they’re not going to kill anyone, they can’t cause much damage, they’re very food motivated and willing to train,” he explains.

“But for someone like me who wants a dog that I can properly train with a really sound temperament, they just always have an undertone of anxiety.”

1. Greyhound

Boateng calls greyhounds ‘boring’ dogs that are ‘not for someone who is into training’.

“Greyhounds are awesome… but it’s not the kind of dog you want to train and do stuff with,” he says.

Boateng’s list has garnered some mixed responses, with many greyhound and pug owners standing up for their pooches.

However, other dog owners have backed Boateng’s expertise.

“As a husky owner I knew the husky would be on this list, they’re not for everyone, but the breed is rather misunderstood till you own one,” one wrote.

@apexdogtraining DISCLAIMER: THIS IS MY OPINION AND PERSONAL PREFERENCE. I UNDERSTAND YOU MAY OWN ONE OF THESE DOGS, AND THEY MAY BE LOVELY. I HAVE TRAINED ALL OF THESE BREEDS SEVERAL TIMES, I GET IT. This is not a list of dogs you shouldn’t get, just dogs I wouldn’t own after training and looking after many.
