A young girl, just 10 years old, has written a heartbreaking letter to Santa that no child should have to write.

For most of us, Christmas represents the most wonderful time of the year.

The food, the decorations, and the time spent with family and loved ones make it a truly special period.

But, tragically, for a few, Christmas isn’t quite as wonderful as we’d hope.

And this week, one girl’s heartbreaking letter to Santa has left the internet feeling emotional.

As the cost of living crisis rages on, many of us are feeling the pinch.

This is particularly pertinent during the more expensive times of the year, like the holiday season.

While Christmas is a magical time, it’s also undeniably an expensive one.

Buying all the food, decorating your home, and stocking up on gifts for your loved ones can leave people feeling rather stressed.

For some families in the most extreme circumstances, this can mean having to forgo the Christmas cheer, as they simply can’t afford it.

This is certainly true for one anonymous little girl, whose tragic message to Santa has left the internet feeling heartbroken.

The letter was shared by The Big Help Project, a charity based in Liverpool, as a part of its ‘Dear Santa’ campaign.

This campaign aims to raise awareness of families struggling with poverty during the holiday season.

The letter reads: “To Santa, Mum told me you are sick this year and you can’t come to our house. I hope you get better soon. I think it would make my baby brother happy! Love Lilly xx (Age 10). PS. We have been really good.”

The Big Help Project added in their caption: “No child should have to think Santa is poorly and can’t bring them presents. 1 in 7 children will go without any gifts this Christmas. We are using our campaign ‘Dear Santa’ to reflect the struggles families living in poverty will face over the festive season.”

The letter has since been shared by other family charities around the UK to shine a light on this important issue.

Come Together Christmas 2023 wrote on Instagram: “No child should ever have to write a letter like this.

“It’s estimated around 1 in 7 children will wake up to nothing on Christmas morning this year and around 24,000 children in Liverpool are living in poverty and deprived conditions. But with the increasing costs of living and energy prices it’s not just a case of no toys or gifts there’s thousands of families struggling for gas, electricity and food.”

Many people have been left deeply touched by the letter, with one writing: “So distressing. I collect for the food bank have done for the last ten years at Christmas time, I don’t have a lot myself but it distressed me so much to think these children have nothing, so the last five years my friends have been kindly helping me with food and they have been extremely generous getting little Christmas presents for children we collected 70 presents this year.

“It breaks my heart when I go up to the food bank, to see young couples and pensioners in there, it’s not right in this day and age no one should be living like this. Thankful that there are places and wonderful volunteers who do this.”
