Mariah Carey has clarified her ‘diva’ comment she made towards Meghan Markle when appearing on the Duchess of Sussex’s podcast.
On the most recent episode of Archetypes, the pair were discussing their own personal experiences of being mixed-race women in America.
When Markle asked Carey about the definition of ‘diva’, the singer responded: “You give us diva moments sometimes Meghan.”

This comment apparently stopped the Duchess in her tracks, however, the Grammy award-winning singer has addressed her statement.
In a tweet that links to Markle’s podcast, Carey posted: “Really enjoyed talking to Duchess and Diva Meghan Markle about ‘The Duality of Diva’. Yes! I called her a diva, in the most fabulous, gorgeous, and empowering meaning of the word!!!”

The episode is called ‘The Duality of a Diva’, and Markle, in a voiceover, tells the listener how the singer’s remarks made her feel at the time.
She said: “You couldn’t see me obviously, but I started to sweat a little bit. I started squirming in my chair in this quiet revolt like ‘Wait? What?’.
“So she must have felt my nervous laughter and she jumped right in to make sure I was crystal clear when she said diva, she was talking about the way that I dress, the posture, the clothing.
“She meant ‘diva’ as a compliment but I heard it as a dig.
“I heard it as the word ‘diva’, as I think of it, but in that moment as she explained to me, she meant it as ‘chic’, as ‘aspirational’ and how one very charged word can mean something different for each of us.”

This episode came out around the same time as her interview with The Cut, which has almost overshadowed the podcast due to all the revelations that have come out from it.
In this, she talks about how was once compared to Nelson Mandela, discusses Prince Harry and Prince Charles’ relationship, and reveals if she is ready for forgiveness from the royal family.
