Hachi: A Dog’s Tale follows a college professor (Pretty Woman’s Richard Gere) as he bonds with an abandoned dog that he takes home.
The film is an adaptation of a true story about a loyal dog called Hachikō in Japan during the 1920s.
Upon its release, Hachi grossed $46.7 million on a budget of $16 million.
The movie did not get a theatrical release in the US and was only made available once it came out on DVD and debuted on cable television.
The film only has a 64% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes but it boasts an 84% audience score on the site.
Film critics at the time called the movie ‘an unapologetic tear-jerker’.
One reviewer wrote: “I challenge even the most hard-hearted moviegoer not to spill some saltwater while watching it.”
Despite the film being 14 years old, Hachi: A Dog’s Tale has found new life on Netflix after coming onto the streaming service earlier this year.
Fans have started discussing it on social media, with some claiming that it almost made them almost throw up because of how sad it is.
“Watched Hachi A Dog’s Tale last night and I’m still welling up today thinking about it,” comments one person.
A second viewer adds: “If anyone wants a good cry watch Hachi: A Dog’s Tale on Netflix. I just sobbed so hard I almost threw up 11/10.”
Someone else says: “Man, this Hachi A Dog’s Tale movie on Netflix just had me crying my eyes out.”
A fourth viewer explains: “I watched this and gave myself a panic attack crying so much I couldn’t breathe.”
Another person adds: “Hachi: A Dog’s Tale. Cried so hard at this movie because it’s based on a true story. Richard Gere is excellent in this.”
“First time I watched this I cried so much I was sobbing and both my little boys came in the room wanting to know what had happened,” one viewer writes.
“I cried for hours…it made me adore animals even more.”
