Netflix has turned a cancelled TV series into one of its most popular shows.

The streaming giant is home to some of the biggest programmes in the world, including Stranger Things, Wednesdayand Squid Game.

Netflix also has a reputation for unearthing hidden gems, with shows such as Manifest becoming one of its most-watched programmes after initially getting cancelled by NBC.

Now another cancelled show has found life again on the streaming service.

The Last Kingdom is a period drama set during the 9th century in Anglo-Saxon England.

It is told from the perspective of Uhtred of Bebbanburg (Alexander Dreymon), a man born a Saxon and raised a Dane, who struggles with his conflicting loyalties throughout the series.

Originally, the TV series aired back in 2015 on BBC, having been co-produced by the BBC and BBC America.

However, due to poor viewing figures in the States, BBC America cut ties with the show and let Netflix take over the rights.

Shortly after being dropped from the BBC, the streaming service became its sole distributor.

All five seasons of The Last Kingdom are now available to watch and Netflix and critically, it’s been a major success.

It has a rating of 8.5 out of 10 on IMDB and a Rotten Tomatoes score of 91%, with audiences rating it 95%.

The Last Kingdom aired its final season in 2022 but a follow-up film titled Seven Kings Must Die is set to come out soon.

Dreymon confirmed the exciting news on Instagram.

He shares: “That’s a wrap on The Last Kingdom, on Seven Kings Must Die, and on Uhtred, son of Uhtred.

“As you can tell, I’m slightly out of it, exhausted and overwhelmed.

“I feel so lucky that I got to live part-time in Uhtred’s skin for so many years. From the bottom of my heart, thank you all.”

The show has amassed a loyal fanbase – with some claiming it is better than Game of Thrones.

One fan writes on social media: “The Last Kingdom is my favourite Netflix show. Its series finale far surpassed the Game of Thrones finale!”
