Whoopi Goldberg has reportedly been ‘suspended’ from her role on The View after facing a backlash over her Holocaust comments.

The president of ABC News, Kim Godwin, released a statement on February 1 about the Sister Act star’s ‘wrong and hurtful’ words, after she said the Nazi genocide of the Jews ‘wasn’t about race’.

The statement reads: “Effective immediately, I am suspending Whoopi Goldberg for two weeks for her wrong and hurtful comments.

“While Whoopi has apologised, I’ve asked her to take time to reflect and learn about the impact of her comments. The entire ABC News organisation stands in solidarity with our Jewish colleagues, friends, family and communities.”

According to Variety, the US network decided to suspend the actress after consulting with the top people at Disney.

So far, Goldberg has yet to speak out on her two-week suspension.

The backlash all started when Goldberg appeared on the US chat show and began discussing the Pulitzer prize-winning book, ‘Maus,’ which is about the Holocaust.

Referring to the novel’s ‘nudity and bad language,’ she said: “I’m surprised that’s what made you uncomfortable, the fact that there was some nudity.

“I mean, it’s about the Holocaust, the killing of six million people, but that didn’t bother you?

“If you’re going to do this, now let’s be truthful about it because the Holocaust isn’t about race. No. It’s not about race.”

Goldberg went on to say that it was about ‘two groups of white people,’ adding: “The minute you turn it into race, it goes down this alley. Let’s talk about it for what it is. It’s how people treat each other. It’s a problem.

“It doesn’t matter if you are black or white because black, white, Jews, Italians – everybody eats each other.

“So if you are uncomfortable if you hear about ‘Maus,’ should you be worried? Should your child say, ‘Oh my God, I wonder if that’s me?’

“No. That’s not what they’re going to say. They’re going to say, ‘I don’t want to be like that’.”

Goldberg has since issued an apology over her comments.
