Brendan Fraser, who has made a return to the spotlight, has revealed that he would be up for doing a fourth instalment of The Mummy franchise.

The George of the Jungle star, who played the iconic character of Rick O’Connell in the action movies, told Variety that if the concept was ‘right’, he’d be interested.

He said: “I don’t know how it would work but I’d be open to it if someone came up with the right concept.”

During the interview, The Mummy (1999) director, Stephen Sommers, went on to discuss why Fraser played Rick O’Connell perfectly.

He said: “He could throw a punch and take a punch and he had a great sense of humour.

“You really like the guy. He never comes across as cocky or arrogant.”

Sommers went on to add that Fraser performed the majority of his character’s stunts and was ‘game for anything’.

Fraser starred in three of The Mummy films; The Mummy, The Mummy Returns (2001), and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008).

There were discussions for there to be a fourth film in the franchise. According to The Hollywood Reporter, this would follow the O’Connell family face-off against Aztec mummies in South Africa.

However, in the end, Universal opted for a reboot involving Tom Cruise instead.

It came out in 2017 and was poorly received, with a poor rating of 15% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Reportedly, the movie was intended to be the start of Universal’s ‘Dark Universe’ series, similar to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

But the poor reception to The Mummy killed off any future instalments, including an Invisible Man film starring Johnny Depp.

Elsewhere in Fraser’s interview with Variety, he gave his personal opinion on why the reboot wasn’t a success.

The Whale star said: “It is hard to make that movie.

“The ingredient that we had going for our Mummy, which I didn’t see in that film, was fun. That was what was lacking in that incarnation.

“It was too much of a straight-ahead horror movie. The Mummy should be a thrill ride, but not terrifying and scary.”

Back in 2018, Fraser opened up to GQ magazine about working on The Mummy franchise.

He told the publication: “By the time I did the third Mummy picture in China [2008], I was put together with tape and ice – just, like, really nerdy and fetishy about ice packs.

“Screw-cap ice packs and downhill-mountain-biking pads, ’cause they’re small and light and they can fit under your clothes.

“I was building an exoskeleton for myself daily.”

He continued: “I needed a laminectomy. And the lumbar didn’t take, so they had to do it again a year later.”

Fraser went on to claim that for almost seven years, he would be in and out of hospitals.
