Grimes, whose real name is Claire Elise Boucher, has admitted that she ‘can’t identify’ with the term mother.
The Canadian singer, 34, shares a boy and girl, X Æ A-XII and Exa Dark Sideræl, with Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who has been in the headlines following his Twitter takeover.
The pair broke up back in March, however, they’ve remained good friends.
Recently, Grimes has spoken out about motherhood and the experiences it has presented her.

In an interview with Vogue magazine, the ‘Genesis’ singer said ‘being a mother feels weird’.
She explained (via The Mirror): “I think having a baby was a big rebirth for me artistically. Being a mother feels weird for me to say.
“X says Claire, but he doesn’t say ‘mama’… like, maybe he can sense my distaste for the word ‘mother’.
“I don’t even know why I have a distaste for it, I respect it… I just can’t identify with it, weirdly.”
Grimes and Musk welcomed their first child in May 2020.

Initially, they announced that their son was called X Æ A-12. However, this was quickly changed to X Æ A-Xii, due to California law.
Later on, Grimes reflected on the name change and said on Instagram: “Roman numerals. Looks better tbh.”
While the singer appears to refer to her son simply as ‘X’, Musk revealed the full pronunciation on Joe Rogan’s podcast.
The chief executive of Twitter explained: “It’s just X, the letter X. And then the Æ is, like, pronounced ‘ash’. And then A-12 is my contribution.
“Archangel-12, the precursor to the SR-71, coolest plane ever.”
Grimes and Musk went on to welcome their second child in December 2021.
They named their daughter, who was born via surrogacy, Exa Dark Sideræl.
In an interview with Variety, the 34-year-old explained that her daughter’s name references the supercomputing term exaFLOPS, while also the ability to perform 1 quintillion floating-point operations per second.
Grimes said Dark represents ‘the unknown’ and ‘the beautiful mystery of our universe’.
While Sideræl is apparently pronounced ‘sigh-deer-ee-el’ and represents ‘the true time of the universe, star time, deep space-time, not our relative earth time’.

She added that the name also honours her favourite Lord of the Rings character, Galadriel.
After discussing her daughter in the interview, Grimes then took to Twitter and asked her fans to respect her child’s privacy.
She tweeted: “I did this to speak abt my work, not ‘reveal all’ haha.
“Def held back a lot, contrary to headline.
“And didn’t mean for them to find out about my daughter so please respect her privacy as I’d love her to be able to live as private of a life as possible.”
