Jeremy Clarkson has broken his silence after his ‘vile’ Meghan Markle rant sparked backlash on social media.
The Clarkson’s Farm presenter, 62, is known for sharing his controversial views and is notably critical of Prince Harry’s wife, the Duchess of Sussex.
Clarkson has previously claimed that her tears at the Queen’s funeral were ‘not real’ and slammed her for wanting to take time off royal duties after an incident with her son.
However, his latest column in The Sun has gone one step further, leading to worldwide outrage and more than 6,000 complaints.

Following Prince Harry and Markle’s Netflix docuseries, Harry & Meghan, Clarkson shared an opinion piece for the news outlet on December 16.
The former Top Gear presenter said he hates Markle more than serial killer Rose West and wished she would be paraded ‘naked through the streets’.
He wrote: “I hate her. Not like I hate Nicola Sturgeon or Rose West. I hate her on a cellular level.
“At night, I’m unable to sleep as I lie there, grinding my teeth and dreaming of the day when she is made to parade naked through the streets of every town in Britain while the crowds chant ‘Shame!’ and throw lumps of excrement at her.”
Clarkson then claimed that ‘everyone’ his age ‘thinks the same way’.

His words have since gone viral and many celebrities have taken to social media to criticise him.
Following the backlash, Clarkson has broken his silence on Twitter and said he is ‘horrified’ by the hurt he has caused.
He tweeted on December 19: “Oh dear. I’ve rather put my foot in it.
“In a column I wrote about Meghan, I made a clumsy reference to a scene in Game of Thrones and this has gone down badly with a great many people.
“I’m horrified to have caused so much hurt and I shall be more careful in future.”

Many people have taken to the social media platform and said Clarkson’s apology isn’t good enough.
One person responded: “No this isn’t clumsy, it is dangerous.
“You have millions of followers, it takes one person to read what you write as a call to action and the worst could happen, furthermore, is the comparison to Rose West clumsy? Or more in the realm of normality for you?”
Another added: “You’ve managed to write the absolute minimum to climb down from your disgusting comments, almost certainly driven by self-interest.
“Any shred of contrition requires a full apology to Meghan Markle.”
While a third said: “Not good enough. It was abusive, the whole column is. You should resign and make a significant donation to Women’s Aid.”
“The words ‘I’m sorry’ and ‘I apologise and ‘I will reach out to her directly’ are tellingly missing from this so-called apology,” someone else remarked.

Prior to his apology, celebrities such as Carol Vorderman and comedian John Bishop called him out.
The former Countdown host wrote: “Not on any level, in any circumstance, is it OK to write this stuff about any woman and absolutely NO to ‘everyone who’s my age thinks the same’.
“No no no. We absolutely do NOT think the same.
“Listen to the noise Jeremy. The crowds are chanting ‘shame on YOU’.”
Bishop also said: “WTF is this??
“I don’t care who you are or who you work for you simply can not write things like this.
“It is a blatant appeal to incite humiliation and violence on a woman. Some have excused it as dark humour.
“There is no joke here @JeremyClarkson and no excuse.”

The backlash has even led Clarkson’s daughter, Emily, to speak out.
Taking to Instagram, she wrote: “My views are and always have been clear when it comes to misogyny, bullying and the treatment of women by the media.
“I want to make it very clear that I stand against everything that my dad wrote about Meghan Markle and I remain in support of those who are targeted with online hatred.”
