Oral s** is now considered to be the main cause of throat cancer.

A professor has been collecting data over the last two decades and has discovered a huge increase in throat cancer – regarding it as a throat cancer ‘epidemic’.

This is largely down to one particular type of throat cancer, which is located in the area of the tonsils at the back of the throat.

It’s been identified as oropharyngeal cancer and the main cause for the rise in cases is due to the human papillomavirus (HPV).

According to the NHS, this is one of the most common forms of virus and while it is usually unharmful, it can develop into a cancer.

The health organisation adds: “Many types of HPV affect the mouth, throat or genital area,” along with mentioning that it is easy to catch.

It also says that oral s** is one of the most common factors in catching HPV.

According to Medical News Today, HPV is responsible for 70 per cent of oropharyngeal cancers in the US.

Hisham Mehanna, a Professor at the Institute of Cancer and Genomic Sciences at the University of Birmingham, conducted the research.

He states in his article for The Conversation that oropharyngeal cancer has become more common than cervical cancer in both the US and the UK.

Mehanna writes: “For oropharyngeal cancer, the main risk factor is the number of lifetime s**ual partners, especially oral s**.

“Those with six or more lifetime oral s** partners are eight point five times more likely to develop oropharyngeal cancer than those who do not practise oral s**.”

From his studies, Mehanna discovered that ’80 per cent of adults reported practising oral s** at some point in their lives’ – in the UK.

He did state that ‘only a small number of those people develop oropharyngeal cancer’.

“However, a small number of people are not able to get rid of the infection, maybe due to a defect in a particular aspect of their immune system,” he adds.

Mehanna reports that the ‘prevailing theory’ is many people catch HPV infections throughout their lives and will never know that they have it.

In his article, he mentions that there is already a vaccine for women who have HPV that will prevent them from getting cervical cancer.

However, there is not one developed for men yet.

Countries such as the US, UK and Australia are working on a vaccine in order to roll out a ‘gender-neutral vaccination policy’.
