A single mum-of-five reportedly ‘faces a year in prison’ after letting her ’14-year-old daughter babysit her other children’.

Melissa Henderson, who is based in Georgia, US, is believed to have been charged with criminal reckless conduct after letting her eldest child take care of her other kids when their daycare centre closed down in May 2020, during the pandemic.

Apparently, the teenager became distracted with her online learning and was unaware that her four-year-old brother had ‘slipped out of the house and played with a friend’.

Although the teen managed to locate the child, the friend’s mum is believed to have contacted the police.

Two weeks later, Henderson was ‘arrested in front of her kids,’ reports Reason Magazine.

She told the publication: “I almost don’t have words for how low it made me feel. To truly feel in the bottom of my heart that if I’m anything, it’s a good mother and everything you do is for your kids. To be stripped of that to the point where you are handcuffed in front of them.”

Reportedly, Henderson’s ex-husband bailed the mum out. However, criminal proceedings have been ongoing and if she’s convicted, she could ‘face a maximum penalty of one year in prison,’ as well as a ‘fine of $1,000’.

The parent’s attorney, David DeLugas, has argued that the case against her is unconstitutional and is seeking for it to be dismissed.

Apparently, he’s cited a 1997 Georgia Supreme Court ruling which states that it’s unlawful to punish a parent for making a normal decision.
