Elisabeth Moss has said that Scientology is ‘misunderstood’ and people have the wrong idea about it.

The star opened up about the highly controversial religion in an interview with the New Yorker.

Chatting to the publication, she said: “It’s a place that is very open to, like, welcoming in somebody who wants to learn more about it. I think that’s the thing that is probably the most misunderstood.”

The 39-year-old, who was reportedly brought up with Scientology, went on to add that she can’t ‘control’ other people’s perceptions of it.

She added: “People can obviously hold in their mind whatever they want to, and I can’t control that. If it’s not that, it’s going to be something else.”

When the American was then asked what fans of The Handmaid’s Tale may think about her involvement in the church, Moss continued: “I would just encourage people to find out for themselves.

“I’ve certainly been guilty of reading an article or watching something and taking that as gospel… And obviously, something like religious freedom and resistance against a theocracy is very important to me.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Moss claimed that Scientology has helped her to communicate better and she can listen to people without ‘belittling them for what they think or believe’.

Over the years, Scientology has come under scrutiny after being accused of numerous practices, including mind control, assigning members to hard labour, and encouraging members to cut ties with their families.

However, these allegations have been slammed by the church, which has branded them as ‘false and mischaracterised’.
