Mom Goes On Taken-Style Mission And Hunts Down 10 Involved In Daughter’s Murder One By One
In a story reminiscent of a Hollywood action thriller a determined mother from Mexicoembarked on a relentless mission to find her missing daughter.
Miriam Rodríguez Martínez transformed from an ordinary businesswoman into a relentless vigilante after the unthinkable happened to her family.
Her daughter’s kidnapping and murder ignited a fire within her that would burn for years, leading her on a dangerous journey through Mexico’s criminal underworld.
What followed was an extraordinary tale of maternal determination, courage, and sacrifice that would ultimately cost Miriam her life but cement her legacy as a symbol of unwavering love and justice.

Who is Miriam Rodríguez Martínez?
Miriam Rodríguez Martínez was a businesswoman and mother living in San Fernando, Tamaulipas, a region of Mexico plagued by cartel violence and corruption.
At 56 years old, she was an ordinary citizen who had never imagined she would become a crime fighter.
After her daughter’s tragic fate, Miriam founded a local group representing over 600 families who were victims of violence and had missing relatives.
She became known for her strong, caring, and cheerful character, according to her fellow campaigners. Miriam was driven by an incomplete feeling.
Despite eventually finding her daughter, she knew nothing would ever return to normal, and she couldn’t rest while others responsible remained free.
How was her daughter killed?
In 2012, Miriam’s 20-year-old daughter, Karen Alejandra Salinas Rodríguez, was kidnapped for ransom by members of a criminal gang, per the BBC.
The young woman became another victim in Mexico’s ongoing war with drug cartels.
After an agonizing search, Miriam eventually discovered her daughter’s body in a clandestine grave. Karen had been brutally murdered by her captors.
The discovery was devastating, but rather than being paralyzed by grief, Miriam channeled her pain into an unrelenting mission to ensure every person responsible would face justice.

Who killed her daughter?
Karen was killed by members of Los Zetas, one of Mexico’s most notorious and dangerous drug cartels, per the Mirror.
The Zetas were known for their brutal tactics and widespread control over regions of Mexico, including Tamaulipas state.
The cartel operated with such impunity that even official authorities were often too frightened to bring cartel members to justice for fear of retribution.
Los Zetas had kidnapped Karen for ransom, and when their demands weren’t met or complications arose, they murdered the young woman.
The crew that abducted her daughter included multiple members, and Miriam made it her life’s mission to identify and capture nearly every living member of that crew.
How did Miriam find them?
Miriam employed tactics worthy of a trained detective or undercover agent.
She cut and dyed her hair, created fake identities, and used elaborate disguises to infiltrate the criminal network.
She posed as various characters including a health worker and election official to obtain names and addresses of those responsible.
Miriam invented excuses to meet the gang members’ families, skillfully teasing out crucial details that would help build her investigation.
Her initial breakthrough came when she convinced authorities to apprehend one gang member she had identified.
This arrest created a domino effect: the captured criminal provided information about others involved, including an 18-year-old accomplice who ultimately revealed Karen’s location.
One dramatic capture occurred when Miriam tracked down ‘the florist,’ a gang member who was selling flowers on the street to make ends meet.
When he recognized her and tried to flee, the then-56-year-old mother tackled him to the ground and held a gun to his throat, threatening to kill him if he moved.
She successfully detained him until authorities arrived. In another instance, she even foiled an attempted kidnapping of her own husband by the Zetas, chasing the gang in her car while simultaneously notifying the army, which led to their arrest.

The revenge
Contrary to what the sensational headlines might suggest, Miriam did not kill the gang members herself.
Instead, she tracked them down and turned them over to authorities for prosecution. Her mission was about bringing them to justice through the legal system, not vigilante execution.
She provided police with crucial information that ensured the gang members were arrested and jailed.
Miriam confronted at least one culprit face-to-face in an alleyway, delivering a warning, but her primary method was gathering evidence and intelligence that would lead to legal convictions.
Over three years following Karen’s death, she was instrumental in bringing down 10 criminals from Los Zetas cartel.
While Miriam didn’t face legal consequences for her vigilante investigation work, she faced something far more deadly: retaliation from the cartel.
In March 2017, one of the gang members she had helped imprison escaped from custody. Following this escape, her colleagues reported that she began receiving threats. Miriam requested police protection from authorities, but according to her family and colleagues, her pleas were ignored.
While the state prosecutor claimed security needs had been met and police made rounds three times daily, her family disputed this assertion, maintaining that adequate protection was never provided.

What happened to Miram?
On May 10, 2017, Mexico’s Mother’s Day, Miriam Rodríguez Martínez was murdered.
Gunmen broke into her home in San Fernando, Tamaulipas, and shot her 12 times. She was killed while pursuing one of her final targets, ambushed outside her home in a calculated act of revenge.
Her death sent shockwaves through Mexico and the international community. Tamaulipas governor Francisco García Cabeza de Vaca declared on Twitter that the state government ‘will not allow the death of Miriam Rodríguez to be one statistic more.’
The Mexican human rights commission issued a statement deploring her murder and calling for a full investigation.
In death, Miriam became a hero in her hometown. A bronze plaque was erected in her honor in San Fernando’s central square, commemorating her extraordinary courage in taking on one of Mexico’s most dangerous cartels.
Her legacy inspired countless individuals and represented the broader struggle of Mexican families searching for disappeared loved ones.
Miriam had told her other daughter, Azalea, that she would not rest until she had found everyone responsible for taking Karen, which was a promise she kept until her final breath.
