A woman has gone viral on social media with her ‘optical illusion’ woolly hat.
Otelia Carmen, an environment designer, recently took to TikTok and showed off her new winter accessory that apparently is ‘colour-changing’.
In a series of clips, she said: “So, I bought this green hat at the store today and I brought it home and when I took it out, I was like, ‘Why is this brown?'”

Metamerism is when an item’s colour appears to change, due to different spectral emissions from various light sources.
To prove her point, Carmen showed the hat in various lighting. When stood in her dining room, it appeared to be green, but in her bedroom, it looked as though it was a reddish brown.
Determined to find out its actual colour, the TikToker went outside and established that it is definitely brown.

Carmen’s videos on the hat have now accumulated millions of views, but people in the comments are still not satisfied.
One viewer said: “I swear it was red inside then turned brown outside. Which means it changes into 3 different colours…”
Another added: “Girl, that hat is orange, brown burgundy, mauve, army green.”
“It’s the blue/gold dress all over again!” a third pointed out.
Others took to the comments and said they ‘wished’ they could get their hands on their own ‘colour-changing’ hat.
“Yes, cause I really want!” one person enthused.
Pitching in, a second commented: “… So how much do you want for that hat?”
