Meghan Markle and Prince Harry fans have defended the couple after they were criticised for holding hands at the ceremony for the Queen at Westminister Hall on Wednesday.

People are taking to Twitter and debating the display of public affection between the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, with some branding it ‘classless’.

“The Royal Family leave our beloved Queen in Westminster Hall with grace and dignity except for Harry and Meghan who just have to hold hands like two lovesick teenagers,” one person tweeted.

“They really get on my nerves.”

However, others have argued that this is showing ‘double standards’ between the royals, as Zara and Mike Tindell were also spotted holding hands.

Defending the Duke and Duchess, one person tweeted: “Let’s break Twitter. Wasn’t it nice for Harry and Meghan to hold hands after the ceremony?”

Another posted in support: “Now the press is obsessed with Harry and Meghan holding hands and calling it ‘inappropriate’ because they are the only ones doing it. Zara Tindall (daughter of Princess Anne) and her husband are also displaying affection.

“Keep calling the double standard out.”

“Y’all bullying Meghan Markle because she’s holding hands with her husband after his grandmother died? You realize they’re human, right?” a third fan posted.

Another individual shared their support for the couple by writing: “People falling over themselves to criticise Prince Harry and Meghan for holding hands on their way out of the ceremony but not noticing Zara and Mike doing the same. Since when was comforting your husband banned?”

“When Meghan and Harry hold hands they’re attention seekers who can’t stick to protocol but it’s crickets when it comes to the rest of the family… weird,” shared someone else.

However, there has also been plenty of criticism with one individual saying: “As the family formally move away from the Queen’s coffin, Meghan holds Harry’s hand! How totally inappropriate! She has no idea of how to behave in an official state occasion and her behaviour is rude to the Queen and the royal family.”

“Meghan Markle holding Harry’s hand in church! Clueless and classless,” another said.

A third critic expressed: “Can’t believe they were holding hands, they can’t be respectful for 2 minutes.”

One individual also questioned the Duke and Duchess’ behaviour, as they asked: “Did my eyes deceive me, or were Harry and Meghan actually holding hands as they walked out of Westminster Hall?! Do they not have any idea how to behave properly?”

“What a shame. Meghan and Harry just had to draw attention to themselves by holding hands. Totally inappropriate but what else can you expect?” added another.

The Queen was taken to Westminster Hall on September 14, where she will rest until the funeral on September 19, which has been declared a national bank holiday.

Her Majesty died at her home in Balmoral aged 96 and despite not making it in time to see her before her death, Prince Harry cancelled all his charity events to be there with his family.

The Duke and Duchess are expected to stay in the UK until Her Majesty’s funeral.
