David Harbour’s Santa delivers ‘season’s beatings’ in the new trailer for the upcoming Christmas action movie Violent Night.

The black comedy stars the Stranger Things actor and judging by the trailer, it could be the festive action film that rivals Die Hard.

The synopsis for the film reads: “An elite team of mercenaries breaks into a family compound on Christmas Eve, taking everyone hostage inside.

“However, they aren’t prepared for a surprise combatant: Santa Claus is on the grounds, and he’s about to show why this Nick is no saint.”

People on social media have been discussing the trailer, and they have been praising the crazy concept of the movie.

One viewer expressed: “What do you get if you combine Home Alone, Die Hard and a splattering of John Wicks???

“By the looks of it Violent Night! David Harbour as Santa could be the best Santa we never knew we needed.”

If it is half as good as the trailer, it could dethrone Die Hard,” admitted somebody else.

A third person commented: “Never thought I’d ever see Santa drinking a glass of beer, throwing a few punches and sporting a man bun, but I’m loving it.”

“It doesn’t come out for two more months and this is already my new favourite Christmas movie,” claimed one fan.

A fifth user on social media commented: “Don’t know who thought of this concept but it’s amazing.”

Harbour is no stranger to action roles, having starred in films such as Extraction, Hellboy, and Black Widow.

Tommy Wirkola is the director behind this film and he told Empire that the Stranger Things star was the ‘perfect choice’ for the role.

He added: “His name came up and it was one of those things where me, the studio and the producers were like, ‘Oh yes, the perfect choice. Yeah, we want him’.

“He was the first person we went out to. I sat with him a couple of days later and he was he loved the script and had ideas that were great.”

Wirkola also mentioned how much fun they had creating imaginative action set-pieces where Santa could use anything Christmas related as a weapon.

He said: “One of the things we discovered was that we have to use Christmas as much as we can in the action, and we have to use Santa Claus in this case as much as we can.

“For sure, the sack was something that came up early we knew we had to use in the fight, with the endless nature of it.”

Wirkola also teased that the action shown in the trailer was only ‘the tip of the iceberg’.

The production company behind Violent Night, 87North, are responsible for some of the best action movies of recent years including John Wick, Atomic Blonde, Deadpool 2, Bullet Train and Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw.

With a team like that, viewers can be assured that the film is in safe hands.

Violent Night will be available in cinemas on December 2.
